Set realistic daily goals

Updated: Dec 23, 2024

Each segment of my daily exercise routine is designed with either a time limit or a number of repetitions and when it’s done, I consider it a success.

There’s nothing like having successes even if they’re small ones. All the several things you’ll decide to do in your own beginning program you will try to complete and even if you are not quite perfect on one or two of them it’s still a success! That you actually had a fitness session is in itself the really big deal, and I mark that up as a huge success!

Starting slow is the sure path to success

One big thing I discovered early on is that doing too much or trying too hard in the beginning can create problems and unless you slow down or decrease whatever exercise you think is causing the issue your budding fitness program may end!

So as a general rule I’ve always tried to do just enough that my body feels it. Listen to your body, your legs, arms, shoulders, breathing, heart rate -- trust yourself to know when you’ve had a good workout!

It’s better to have easier, shorter, exercise sessions in the beginning and slowly increase the levels over a period of time. That’s what I did. Maybe on the weekends spend a little more time at it. Finding time is often hard when you’re starting out, have little kids, a job, and all the demands that involves.

I carried this in my wallet for over 30 years, it's old and worn. I read it once in a while. Its now beside my desk on a bulletin board.
